Mr Balbir Singh Renu, 76
Underwent Knee Replacement in 2007
After surgery, my joint replacement specialist and I worked together for a comprehensive, post-rehab program. Trust me, the experience of going through joint replacement surgery was far less demanding than my conviction to move, run and play again. I was back to the court in a couple of months.
If there’s a place you can always find me at - it’s the tennis court. Here, I spend hours practicing every day. Here’s where I am really myself.
My name is Balbir, but friends call me Mr. Unstoppable. I never miss a shot.
I’ve always lived an active life, fit and on top of my game. So, when my knees started hurting because of osteoarthritis in my 60s, it came as a shock.
The pain left me feeling weaker than I have ever felt in my life! I hated that. A friend at the club told me about knee replacement surgery. But I was scared. What if something went wrong? I hated the thought of being a burden on others. And my game- what if I was never able to play again? So I tried everything including alternate therapies like oil massage, Ayurvedic treatment and so many other things. But they only gave temporary relief from pain.
Eventually, the pain was so unbearable, I couldn't sit or stand for more than 15 minutes. “Mr. Unstoppable” used to ring in my ears as I would helplessly hold on to some corner to stand or sit. I couldn’t take it! They assured me that the surgery was safe and that it was no use delaying it.
Finally, I met a Joint replacement specialist. I had advanced osteoarthritis. He spent some time explaining the progression of the disease and telling me about the implant options available to me. He advised a knee replacement without delay.
I was surprised to know that millions of people around the world were living an active life after joint replacement surgery. He invited me back to meet patients, who had undergone the procedure and were living their lives to the fullest. I heard their success stories in awe. I was 100% sure!
After surgery, my joint replacement specialist and I worked together for a comprehensive, post-rehab program. Trust me, the experience of going through joint replacement surgery was far less demanding than my conviction to move, run and play again. I was back to the court in couple of months.
So, here I was again, challenging my opponent, challenging my age. After surgery, I have made it to the Limca Book of Records. Recognition is great. But it’s being able to live life my way that keeps me going.
In addition to being a champion player, Balbir Singh is also a hotelier, a builder and the President of Nagpur District Badminton Association.
Important safety information
Knee replacement is not for everyone. There are potential risks. Recovery takes time and success depends on factors like age, weight and activity level. Only an orthopedic surgeon can tell if knee replacement is right for you & implant options suitable for you.
